Understanding the Leningrad Dutch
Valeri Beim £14.99/$21.95
The Leningrad System of the Dutch is an interesting hybrid of the
Dutch and the Kings Indian. For many years, it was viewed with some
suspicion in view of the slight positional weaknesses created in Black's
position. However in the 1980s dynamic new approaches were introduced
by such players as Sergei Dolmatov, Evgeny Bareev, Mikhail Gurevich
and especially Vladimir Malaniuk. A good understanding of the themes
of the Leningrad is at the least as important as detailed knowledge
of its theory. Beim has a wealth of experience with the Leningrad
Dutch is an accomplished trainer, so is ideally qualified to guide
the reader through the twists and turns of this remarkable opening.
The Cambridge Springs
Krzysztof Panczyk & Jacek Ilczuk £13.99/$18.95
The Cambridge Springs is a popular defence to the Queen's Gambit that
takes its name from the famous tournament in 1904 during which it
was tested in a number of games. Since then it has become firmly established
as a club-player's favourite, since Black sets a number of traps and
can generate a very quick initiative if White fails to respond precisely.
Several world champions have used the Cambridge Springs, most notably
Alekhine and Smyslov, while Kasparov has played it on occasion, including
a sensationally quick victory over Karpov in 1985. It currently has
a good theoretical reputation and is frequently played at grandmaster
level.
Bobby Fischer: From Genius to Chess Legend
Eduard Gufeld £15.99
To many Bobby Fischer is the name of chess. Remembered for his epic
match in 1972 with Soviet World Champion Boris Spassky at a time where
the Cold War was at it's height, the American has always been for
many chess' great enigma. In this book from Gufeld, who was assisted
by the likes of GM Wolfgang Unzicker, the games, traits, and personality
of Fischer are examined, with some interesting conclusions. It's lucid
reading style makes this an enjoyable way to acquaint yourself with
one of the all time greats.
Multiple Choice Chess 2
Graeme Buckley £14.99/$19.95

relevant plans and tactics, and select one of the four possible choices.
A scoring system has been devised which can assess your playing strength
according to the answers that you give.
Taming the Sicilian
Nigel Davies £14.99/$19.95
The Sicilian Defence is Black's most ambitious and popular defence
to 1 e4. Finding a suitable weapon against it has taxed many a player's
brain. Should White play the main lines and attempt to find a profitable
route through the labyrinth of theory, or instead head for the more
tranquil waters of the various Anti-Sicilians on offer? Grandmaster
Nigel Davies, in this refreshing book on what has become of difficult
choice for many a White player, proposes the answer lies somewhere
in between. Advocating a system of taking the Open Sicilian head-on,
but then fianchettoing the king's bishop, Davies provides us with
an easy-to-use system for White which can renew our confidence after
1 e4 c5.
