Pal Benko: My Life, games and Compositions
Pal Benko & Jeremy Silman,
£35/$45
Siles Press, 668 pages (hardback)
An
absolute monster of a book! Printed in hardback and running to 668 pages
as one of my colleagues pointed out "that's not a book,
that's a weapon!" Indeed, this new title from Siles Press (the
company that brought you How to Reassess Your Chess) is impressive.
138 deeply annotated games, a survey of Benko's openings by John
Watson, an interview with the man himself among others and 300
of Benko's
chess compositions.
The games are split into thirteen chronologically ordered chapters
charting Benko's entire chess career starting in Budapest in 1945
and ending in the States in the late eighties. The games have obviously
been carefully chosen to both entertain and instruct with extensive
annotations and commentary on each and every game. The beauty of
this book is found in the little extras that abound throughout. Each of
the thirteen chapters contain an introduction to events by Benko
giving him ample opportunity to slip in previously unknown anecdotes about
Fischer, Reshevsky, Larsen and many others. Photographs and mini
biographies of Benko's contemporaries bring to light the characters described
making it less like a collection of games and more like a documentary.
There's also a massive survey of Benko's openings by John Watson
showing
the scope of Benko's theoretical contributions to the game. Split
into two sections, 'Benko as White' and 'Benko as Black', and covering
131 pages this could have made a book all by itself.
If you ever get bored with the games, and trust me that isn't likely,
than you can try to solve one of Benko's Bafflers!. 300 of his
own compositions have been split into sections; 2-move mates, 3- (and
more) move mates, letter problems, endgames, helpmates and puzzles. A
truly amazing book (and weapon)! |

| King's Indian Battle Plans
200+ Annotated games with Fresh Ideas for Winning
Andrew Martin
£17.99/$29.95
Thinkers Press, 384 pages
Most books on chess openings are just full of variations with little
in the way of guidance or plans - this huge book is different. Not
only is it loaded with top notch annotated games by IM Andrew Martin,
one of the world's experts on this system, but the games are peppered
with hundreds of 'ideas'.
These suggestions show you new plans, or possible plans, and what
happens in the current game under scrutiny. Often at the end of each
game is a quick summary of what Martin assesses concerning the line
which was used. The best players in the business, mostly from the
last 6-7 years, are shown to be formidable masters with games that
include quick wins as a strategical masterpieces. The names of Korchnoi,
Kasparov, Kramnik, Fischer, Vaisser, Nunn, Topolov, Murey and many
more are spread across the landscape in a vast field of possibilities.
All the lines of the KID are discussed in detail proportional to
their actual use in the real world of tournament play: 4 Pawns Attack,
Saemisch, Averbakh, Fianchetton, Seirwawan/Kramer/Odds & Ends,
Classicals - Makagonov, Gligorich/Petrosian, Bayonet, Mar Del Plata,
and others.
As a number of celebratory games are included to show you why the
King's Indian Defense is so fasinating, so also is a chapter included
on "How Not to Play the King's Indian Defence", replete
with disasters for the unprepared. This book contains nearly 400
complete games with over 240 annotated. The power plays, the counterattacks,
and the ruthlessness of this "defense" are revealed and
now available in this first big book written about the King's Indian
in years.

Budapest Fajarowicz
Lev Gutman
£15.99/$22.95
Batsford, 287 pages
The Fajarowitz variation of the Budapest Gambit is one of Black's
most exciting options against 1 d4. Established 'theory' has maintained
a dim view of this line, which nevertheless has been a favourite
of club players. With a slightly better theoretical reputation its
popularity would explode.
In this groundbreaking work, Gutman rehabilitates this ancient
gambit with his usual creative and original analysis. A cult
book in the making, it is a must for all club and tournament
players.
A former second of Viktor Korchnoi, author Lev Gutman is an outstanding
expert on opening theory. He is also an International Grandmaster.

Jan Pinski,
Everyman, 160 pages

abound. Anyone who enters the murky waters of the Two
Knights Defence must be well prepared for the mind-boggling complications
that ensue. In this book, openings theoretician
Jonathan Tait guides the reader through both the well-trodden paths
of the main lines plus the less fashionable side variations of
this most complex opening. Using illustrative games, Tait studies
the key ideas and tactics for both Black and White.

Bobby Fischer Goes To War
David Edmonds and John Eidnow.
£14.99/$26.99
Hardback, 302 pages
Since 1948, the USSR had dominated the World Chess Championships
- evidence, Moscow claimed, of the superiority of the Soviet system.
But then came Bobby Fischer.
A dysfunctional genius, Fischer was uniquely equipped to take on
the Soviets. His every waking hour was dedicated to the game. He
had steamrollered all opposition to reach the championship. When he
became increasingly volatile, Henry Kissinger phoned him, urging
Fischer to fight for his country.
Against him was Spassky, complex, sensitive, the most un-Soviet of
champions. As the authors reveal, when Spassky began to lose, the
KGB decided to step in.
Drawing upon unpublished Soviet and US records, this is a fascinating
story oif history, politics and chess. And at its core it is a human
tragedy, a story of brilliance and triumph, hubris and despair. By
the authors of 'Wittgenstein's Poker'.

Learn Chess Tactics
John Nunn
£12.99/$19.95
160 pages
This book teaches basic tactical ideas such as the fork, pin, and
discovered attack, and introduces general ideas such as elimination,
immobilization and compulsion. A basic knowledge of simple tactics will
enable a novice to start winning games, by giving checkmate or capturing
material. As the player progresses, his tactical arsenal will broaden,
and he will start to play sacrifices and combinations, and develop a
deeper understanding of the game. Players who fail to study tactics
systematically tend to suffer from tactical blind-spots that plague
them throughout their playing career, and thus they fail to realize
their full potential.

French Defence (3.Nc3 Bb4)
Lev Psakhis
£15.99/$26.95
Past and present, the French Defence has been
and remains a popular choice against White’s king’s pawn opening.
Top-class grandmasters
such as Korchnoi, Morozevich, Bareev and Short continue to practise
it with success. Since the publication of The Complete French in
1992 – a highly acclaimed standard work – the volume of theory has
increased to such an extent that the author has now divided his material
into three volumes.
French Defence 3 Nc3, featuring a wealth of fully annotated illustrative
games as well as bang-up-to-date theory, covers the consequences
of 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 to which Black can reply with the Winnawer
variation 3...Bb4, leading to sharp play on both flanks; the Rubinstein/Burn
lines based on ...dxe4, resulting in active play in the centre;
or the Classical 3...Nf6 provoking the advance of White's e-pawn
to e5 whereupon Black loses no time challenging White's centre
pawns with ...f6 or ...c5, and obtaining lively counterplay.

Danish Dynamite
Karsten Muller & Martin Voigt
£15.95/$24.95
"
1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3, is one of the most aggressive chess openings
ever devised. Dynamite was invented by a Swede, Alfred Nobel. The
book you are reading now, however, was not written by Nordic players.
Instead, Grandmaster Karsten Müller and FIDE Master Martin Voigt
bring a touch of German method to the analysis of the explosive group
of classical open games where White goes for out-and-out attack based
on an early e4, d4 and Bc4, often with c2-c3 to follow.
Müller and Voigt do not confine themselves to the Danish
Gambit alone but they examine a whole family of related opening
variations that share some common characteristics. Most importantly,
White is ready to offer some material (a pawn or two, sometimes
a piece or more). White goes for the jugular and if Black is not
careful he will not even reach the middle game, let alone an endgame.
...A guiding principle for the authors of this book is that White
will play attacking chess, fighting for the initiative at every
move. If Black does not meet the challenge in an equally determined
way, he will surely lose." – From the Foreword by Tim Harding |

Looking for Trouble
Dan Heisman
£12.99/$17.95
This book is written to address an underemphasized area of chess
training and study: the identification of and reaction to threats.
For beginner and intermediate-level players, the study of tactics
is paramount. Almost all tactics books take the approach of providing
a position where there i a forced win, checkmate, or draw. However,
this book takes a different tack The author helps you to recognize
