| Malcolm Pein Reports:
Round 6 3rd August 2002
IM Matthew Turner dispatched top seed Krishnan Sasikiran of
India after falling for a fiendish trap Round 6 of the Smith & Williamson
British Chess Championships.
Turner's tricks are legendary and Sasikiran perhaps lacked
knowledge of his opponent's style. You also might say that his pawn grab showed
either naivity or arrogance as Turner will be a GM shortly as his title is
expected to be ratified at the next Fide Congress and is unlikely to give away
a pawn so simply.
As one of his fellow competitors put it "Sasikiran probably
prepared all morning but Matthew does not have many openings, he just had a
round of golf before the game. All he needs is a good night's sleep and then
you have to watch out for the tricks".
Turner surprised everyone by playing a main line against
the Queen's Indian Defence but the position was level when he left a pawn en
prise. Without much thought Sasikiran took the pawn and fell into a two-move
trap that won rook for knight and left Turner with an easily won endgame.
There was no break away at the top of the field, Jon
Speelman was struggling against Nick Pert who built up a big space advantage
but managed to steer the game into a drawn rook and pawn endgame a pawn down.
Peter Wells missed a second opportunity to take the sole
lead but decided to agree a draw against Dibyendu Barua in a greatly
advantageous position when short of time. 15 year old Humpy Koneru is also in
the leading group after outplaying Mark Hebden.
