| 7th Essent Chess Tournament Round 1 Malcolm Pein Comments: Anatoly Karpov was felled by Judit Polgar in the first round of the Essent tournament at Hoogeveen in Holland. Polgar sacrificed a bishop and was about to give up the other in a tactical theme credited to former world champion Emmanuel Lasker. Rather than be subjected to that and be mated in a few moves Karpov resigned. There is another funny point to this game and that is Polgars Ra1-b1-b5-e5-e2. Commonly in this variation White plays Ra1-a2-e2 saving two moves but somehow this did not damage Polgar's chances. Karpov's thirteenth move 13. ..Qd6 retreated the queen before it was attacked and was a new idea but perhaps one that won't be repeated in a hurry. Lasker's Double Bishop Sacrifice was first seen in the game E.Lasker - JH Bauer Amsterdam 1889 and it is not a common occurrence at the top level. Another move played is 13. ..Na5. Karpov retreated the queen before it was attacked and this is a new idea but perhaps one that won't be repeated in a hurry. 14.Rb1 b6 15.Re1 Be6 16.Bd3 Rae8 17.Rb5 Na5 18.Rbe5 Nc6 19.R5e2 Bd7 20.d5 Na5 21.Ne5 Bf6 22.Bf4 Bxe5 23.Bxe5 Qxa3 24.Re3 Qc5?? Completely missing what is coming, Karpov has to play things like 24. ..h6 or 24. ..f6. MC Lasker's Double Bishop Sacrifice was first seen in the game E.Lasker - JH Bauer Amsterdam 1889 and it is not a common occurrence at the top level. In this position it screams out to be played and wins trivially. I'm actually very shocked Karpov didn't see this, he can't have been calculating anything as the line is so simple. - Mark Crowther 25.Bxh7+ Kxh7 26.Qh5+ Its forced mate.
