Michael Adams wins the Redbus Tournament


TWIC coverage of Redbus 2000:

TWIC was the official site for the Redbus elite knockout tournament runningFriday April 21st-24th running alongside the Southend Easter Congress.The time control was be 100 minutes plus 30 seconds per move for the whole game with one round per day and two games per round. Matches tied at 1-1 were decided by two ten minute games followed by sudden death blitz if necessary. The prize fund was £7,400 with the eight first round losers receiving 200 pounds, second round losers receive 400 pounds, semi-finalists take home 600 pounds. The two finalists split 3000 pounds with 1600 going to Adams and 14000 to Lalic as the event was settled by speed chess.

In the final both normal timerate games between Bogdan Lalic and Michael Adams were drawn. Two ten minute games were also drawn but then Michael Adams won the first sudden death game.

The Oakham GM tournament took place 11th-19th April 2000, Oakham School, Rutland, Leicestershire. The event was Category VII with an ELO average of 2406). John Henderson reported daily.

Round 9: Irina Krush scored her second IM norm (the first being in the Koltanowski International in San Francisco in 1999) with a final round win against Patrick Hummel. Nicholas Pert needed a win for a GM norm but only drew against Neil McDonald but he did take first place with 6.5/9. Daniel Gormally was much bettr but eventually blundered to a loss against Colin McNab..

LINARES 2000

The Linares 2000 supertournament runs February 28th - March 10th.. Kasparov, Anand, Shirov, Kramnik, Khalifman and Leko play in this double round robin event. TWIC has daily coverage from the event with John Henderson there for on the spot reports, interviews and pictures. Play started on Monday 28th February and finished Friday 10th March.

Round 10: The final round saw all three games drawn before move 30. The rules of the event meant that the winner was to be established by a toss of a coin but the players at first decided to play some blitz games instead. Then they decided that they were too tired. After some discussion both players were declared the winners of the event.

The Corus Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee took place 14th-30th January 2000 in the De Moriaan Community Centre. There were 14 players in the main GM tournament. John Henderson reported daily including pictures and a summary of the days play. The final round was on Sunday 30th January 2000.
