XXII Ciudad de Leon Rapid 2009

Carlsen leaves in late

The Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen had to come from behind twice to win the The XXII Ciudad de Leon tournament in Spain. The Norwegian teenager trailed first Wang Yue in the semi final then Vasily Ivanchuk in the final before finally triumphing in an Armageddon game.

Each match consisted of 4 games at 20 minutes plus 10 seconds a move then if required two 5 minute blitz games and an Armageddon game with White having six minutes to Black's five but Black having draw odds.

Results:

Semi finals

Ivanchuk v Morozevich 1-0, draw, draw, draw, Ivanchuk wins 2.5-1.5.

Carlsen v Wang Yue draw, 0-1, 1-0, draw, draw, 1-0, Carlsen wins 3.5-2.5

Final

Carlsen v Ivanchuk draw, draw, 0-1, 1-0, draw, draw, 1-0, Carlsen wins 4-3.

Some of the decisive games were rather attritional but the Wang Yue v Carlsen match was entertaining. First Wang took the lead with some innovative play in the opening but then he fell into an opening trap, that in a bizarre coincidence was also seen in the game Ivanchuk v Anand from the Leon tournament last year. This was pretty sloppy from Wang to put it mildly but he might have been been expecting a different fourth move from Carlsen.
