The world champion Vishy Anand produced a strong novelty in the opening and crushed the Chinese GM Wang Hao to reach 3/4 and join the US number one Hikaru Nakamura in the lead of theTata Steel tournament at Wijk aan Zee.
Nakamura had to struggle for 69 moves to hold the draw against the prodigy Anish Giri. Giri was a pawn up for most of the game but Nakamura managed to reach rook and three pawns against rook and four pawns all on the kingside which is a theoretical draw with best play.
World number three Levon Aronian had drawn all his games but then defeated the Russian champion Ian Nepomniachtchi easily. Black's eighth move is fatal.

(8...Qb6 9.Qxb6 axb6 gives Black reasonable play for the pawn and 8...Qb6 9.Qxa8 Nc6 is good for him but by inserting cxd4 exd4 he allows the rook on c1 to be protected by the bishop on f4 and all the tactics work for White)
