British Championships 2010 (Entries)

British Championship Entries up to 570

Malcolm Pein reports on a good field for the 2010 British Championships.

Entries for the British Chess Championships are up to five hundred and seventy including more Grandmasters joining the field for the championship. Battle commences on 25th at the University of Kent in Canterbury. One player who will be sorely missed is John Littlewood who competed last year but died last September at the age of 78. John was one of England's most talented attacking players and fittingly, his family have decided to donate an annual prize of £100 to the most brilliant game played by an under eighteen in the British Championship. The prize is particularly apt because John was BCF Director of Junior Chess for a number of years.

John was an excellent trainer but he had no mercy on juniors over the board as I found to my cost a couple of times. Nigel Short was enjoying a spectacular debut in the British championships until he met John.
