Schachbundesliga German League 2011-12 (10-11)

Bundesliga Round 10-11

Rounds 10 and 11 of the Bundesliga were played last weekend and English players were involved in several matches. Luke McShane and Gawain Jones, who live just a few miles from each other in London, were paired together.

McShane played white and opened with the Nimzo-Larsen Attack 1.b3 but achieved no advantage and had to play carefully to secure equality. 4...Bd6 works quite well but the critical line is probably 5.Na3!? heading for c4 then Na5!? is possible and if 6.Be2 a6!? to prevent Nb5 is a very odd line. One more oddity. Had McShane played 7.e4 he would have been two tempi down on a line of the Ruy Lopez Exchange Deferred. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Nc3 Bd6 8.b3

L McShane - G Jones

1.b3 e5 2.Bb2 Nc6 3.e3 Nf6 4.Bb5 Bd6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Nge2 0-0

(7...e4 8.Ng3 Qe7 is more aggressive)

8.0-0 Qe7 9.f4 Bg4 10.Qe1 Rad8 11.fxe5 Bxe5 12.Ng3 Rfe8

Black is fully developed and very active

13.Na4 b5 14.Bxe5 Qxe5 15.Nc3 c5 16.Qf2 h5!

Luke McShane

Final position after 28.cxd3

Baden-Baden lead and have only one serious rival in Werder Bremen, who are Luke McShane's team. They meet in a fortnight's time. Anatoly Karpov made a surprise appearance on Sunday and drew with white against IM Martin Kraemer.

Black plays very energetically against White's quiet setup and storms the kingside. He wins with a deep combination.
