Hungary bettered their defeat of third seeds China, by overcoming top seeds Russia in the fifth round of the Chess Olympiad. Peter Leko beat Alexander Grischuk on top board as Vladimir Kramnik was rested. Hungary have maximum points, as do Georgia, who crushed a very strong Vietnamese team 3.5-0.5, and holders Armenia, who have beaten Russia II and Russia III.

Nigel Short crushed Laurent Fressinet with one of his 'romantic openings' in style as England drew 2-2 with a very strong French team for whom. Sebastian Feller played a fine combination to overcome David Howell and save the match.

Position after 11.Bh6

11...Kg6

An unsuccessful novelty, 11...Re8 12.Ng5+ fxg5 13.Qh5+ wins but 11...Re8 12.Ng5+ Kg8 13.Ne4 Be7 14.Qh5 Be6 is not clear and 11...Ne7 is possible)

Incredibly, 7...Nxe4! is a novelty with the sweet point 9.Qxe4 Bg7 trapping the rook.
