Shak Mamedyarov blundered horribly and lost the lead of the Sparkassen tournament at Dortmund. Mamedyarov may well be invited again after gifting the full point to the local star Arkady Naiditsch. Mamedyarov was clearly better but in a flurry of moves he gave away rook for knight and resigned.
S Mamedyarov - A Naiditsch
Queen's Gambit Accepted
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.Qa4+ Nbd7 6.e4 a6 7.Bxc4 c6 8.Qd1 b5 9.Bd3 Bb7 10.e5 Nd5 11.Nxd5 cxd5 12.Ng5 Be7 13.h4 Qb6 14.Qg4 h6 15.Nf3 g6 16.Bd2 a5 17.0-0 b4 18.a3 Ba6 19.Bxa6 Rxa6 20.Rfc1 Qb7 21.h5 g5 22.Nh2 bxa3 23.bxa3 0-0 24.Qg3 Qb2 25.Nf3 Rb6 26.Bc3 Qb5 27.a4 Qa6 28.Bd2 Kh7 29.Rc7 Rb7 30.Rac1 Rxc7?! 31.Rxc7 Rd8 32.Nh2
(32.Bxg5 hxg5 33.Nxg5+ Bxg5 34.Qxg5 Qe2 35.Qxd8 Qd1+ 36.Kh2 Qxh5+ seems to draw)
32...Qe2 33.Bxa5
(33.Qf3! Qxf3 34.Nxf3 Bb4 to protect a5 35.Bxb4 axb4 and now either 36.Rb7 or 36.a5 leaves Black tied up)
33...Qd1+ 34.Nf1 Qxa4 35.Qc3 Ra8 36.Rxd7?? 0-1
36.Rb7 Rxa5 37.Rxd7 Qxd7 38.Qxa5= was perhaps what White was thinking about.
Arkadij Naiditsch
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
Position after 36.Rxd7 Black plays 36...Qxd7 and he will win for example 37.Ne3 Qa4 38.Bb6 Qa1+ exchanges queens. Mamedyarov could have resisted but at GM level such a position is surely lost.
Scores: 1 Ponomariov (Ukraine) 4/6
2 Le Quang (Vietnam) 3.5 3-4 Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Kramnik (Russia) 3
5 Naiditsch (Germany) 2.5
6 Leko (Hungary) 2
The Biel Young Grandmasters Tournament includes many of the world's leading young players. The British champion David Howell is the lowest rated in the ten player field. He started with a bad defeat but has since drawn two. In round three Howell held Anish Giri. The line up is Vachier-Lagrave (France) 2710, Tomashevsky (Russia) 2708, Caruana (Italy) 2675, So (Philippines) 2665, Andreikin (Russia) 2643, Giri (Holland) 2642, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Vietnam)
2642, Negi (India) 2636, Rodshtein (Israel) 2626, Howell (England) 2620.
So leads the field after winning a tactical battle over Maxim Rodshtein. How did So finish from here?
Wesley So
