England were defeated 1.5-2.5 by Bosnia in the second round of the Chess Olympiad at Khanty Mansisk in Siberia. This was a rather poor result as the Bosnians were out-rated on every board.
Michael Adams lost to Ivan Sokolov on board one after turning down some opportunities to reach to a level position. Adams sacrificed a pawn and never obtained any compensation. The veteran Bojan Kurajica calmly defused Luke McShane with white and Davd Howell, playing white, could not exploit a small edge.
Scotland won 4-0 over Burundi in round one but lost by the same score to the second seeds Ukraine. Wales have had a similar yo yo experience. They lost 4-0 to India and defeated the US Virgin Islands 4-0 in round 2. The latter are missing their former captain and board one, Bill Hook, who died in May.
A couple of the favourites wobbled. Israel were held 2-2 by Indonesia and Azerbaijan, seventh seeds, lost to Vietnam. The Azerbaijani team lacks Vugar Gashimov, who has a long-running dispute with his national federation.
Poland, Ukraine and Georgia are the only teams to have scored two 4-0 wins.
Judit Polgar is playing on board three for Hungary and played a nice combination in round one. The opening looks like a Ruy Lopez : 1.e4. e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 but Black has not had to play Nc6-a5-c6 and so is comfortably placed.
