Russia I won all eleven matches and took the gold medals in the women's competition at the Chess Olympiad. China were second and Georgia third. England fielded an under-strength squad but seeded 39th, they finished a creditable 21st, thanks to fine performances from Kanwal Bhatia and Sarah Hegarty on boards four and five respectively.

Hegarty's score of 7.5/9 was one of the highest percentage scores achieved in the entire tournament and she was undefeated, a superb performance.

Greed is not always good. Black moves every piece to the kingside as White goes pawn grabbing.
