Nigel Short won his third straight game as England took the lead over the Dutch team at the 7th Howard Staunton Memorial being staged at Simpson's in the Strand. Short defeated Ivan Sokolov with a nineteenth century line from the Two Knights Defence, a fitting opening for the surroundings where such lines were popular 150 years ago.

Michael Adams lost to Jan Smeets, his first reverse in four years at Staunton tournaments after he was caught in some clever opening preparation. Luke McShane's unusual Anti Sicilian lured Loek Van Wely into complications and the black queen was soon trapped.

Short's opening line 8.Bd3 concedes time and space but challenges Black to make something of his advantages. He does not and after slowly unravelling Short plays 23.d4 when he is a clear pawn ahead.

A FIDE Grand Prix is underway at Jermuk in Armenia in honour of the 80th anniversary of the birth of the world champion Tigran Petrosian. It's not often a Grandmaster gets both his rooks trapped. Kamsky loses his way in the tactical complications that he instigated. White invites a exchange on e4 in the opening because that would bring his knight towards d6.
